GB News to launch radio station

GB News, the right-leaning television network that launches on Sunday, will also be available on radio under plans announced on Friday.

Rather than be a separate station, it will be a simulcast of the audio from the TV broadcast, which will also be available online as well as Freeview, Sky, Virgin and Freesat.

It is the first time that a TV channel has been simulcast on radio in Britain and could risk the station being labelled as "talk radio on TV" by critics.

The broadcaster said it was agreeing a deal to be available across the UK on the DAB platform as soon as next month.

More than 90pc of the population will be able to listen to the station via the Digital One national multiplex run by Arqiva.

Angelos Frangopoulos, the station's chief executive, said: "GB News is a digital start-up designed to bring greater plurality of voices to UK media so we’re passionate about delivering our programmes on every platform we can, including live DAB digital radio."

He added: "It's a considerable challenge to expand into radio so quickly but this opportunity is too great to miss. It means we can serve more people by giving them the choice to tune in to us anywhere, any time."

Mr Frangopoulos said it was rare for space to become available on the D1 national radio multiplex, which also carries talk radio station LBC as well as music stations such as Capital, Heart and Classic FM: “It was a highly competitive selection process so we’re really delighted.”

Analysts at Enders Analysis said GB News' "personality-led opinion programming" would set it apart from traditional rolling news channels.

"By favouring reaction and discussion over original reporting, the channel avoids competing with types of news programming already well supplied by broadcasters. Conceptually GB News is therefore like talk radio: audiences can dip in at any time of day to hear takes on stories," they wrote in a report published on Friday.

The station will also be Britain's first TV news outlet with a declared political leaning despite Ofcom rules that require television news to be "accurate and impartial".

"Given GB News’ right-leaning stance, balancing the views of different presenters across the schedule - as LBC does in radio - seems unlikely. Instead, the channel will employ ‘personal view’ programmes where presenters offer and are challenged on their perspectives," they write.

Giving presenters "the freedom to say what they think ... may jar with some definitions of impartiality [but] is unlikely to fall foul of Ofcom’s guidelines", they add.

The new channel has attracted some big names as presenters, led by former BBC broadcaster and Sunday Times editor Andrew Neil. He is also the chairman of the new broadcaster.

Others include former ITN newsreader Alastair Stewart, who will present a weekend show; and Simon McCoy, the former BBC and Sky News presenter who will host an afternoon programme with Alexandra Phillips, a former Brexit Party MEP and head of media for the party.

Meanwhile Gloria de Piero - the former Labour MP and Good Morning Britain political editor - will present a lunchtime show with Sunday Telegraph columnist Liam Halligan.

GB News begins broadcasting at 8pm Sunday.
