The GCI Liberty (NASDAQ:GLIB.A) Share Price Is Up 40% And Shareholders Are Holding On

Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). For example, the GCI Liberty, Inc. (NASDAQ:GLIB.A) share price is up 40% in the last year, clearly besting than the market return of around 2.9% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! We'll need to follow GCI Liberty for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

Because GCI Liberty is loss-making, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over the last twelve months, GCI Liberty's revenue grew by 1006%. That's stonking growth even when compared to other loss-making stocks. While the share price gain of 40% over twelve months is pretty tasty, you might argue it doesn't fully reflect the strong revenue growth. So quite frankly it could be a good time to investigate GCI Liberty in some detail. Human beings have trouble conceptualizing (and valuing) exponential growth. Is that what we're seeing here?

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that GCI Liberty shareholders have gained 40% over the last year. A substantial portion of that gain has come in the last three months, with the stock up 12% in that time. Demand for the stock from multiple parties is pushing the price higher; it could be that word is getting out about its virtues as a business.
