GECEMA offers advice on staying warm, updates list of warming centers in Gadsden

Etowah County will face more cold weather Friday and Saturday night, according to Gadsden/Etowah County Emergency Management Agency Public Information Officer Breonna Cole, with lows in the 20s and possible wind chill temperatures as low as 18 degrees.

Cole said people should remember the wind chill temperature is how cold it will feel when people or animals are outside.

She recommends people:

  • Be mindful to layer clothing;

  • Make sure pets and livestock are property cared for;

  • Check your home and auto emergency supply kits;

  • Be safe with fireplaces and other heating .

Warming centers will be available the following locations:

  • The Freedom Center, 1601 W. Meighan Blvd., Gadsden; Open from 6 p.m. Friday through breakfast Sunday morning

  • The Salvation Army, 114 N. 11th St., Gadsden; Open 24 hours through Sunday morning; 256-549-4673.

  • Gadsden Public Library Main Branch, 254 S. College St., Gadsden; Open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; 256-549-4699.
