GEICO, one of Macon’s biggest employers, says it will lay off 2,000 national workers

GEICO Insurance, one of Bibb County’s biggest employers with their office based in east Macon, announced it would lay off 2,000 employees nationally Thursday in a letter.

Disgruntled company employees took to social media to post the letter and lament the layoffs. GEICO’s office on Ocmulgee Boulevard in Macon said it employed 7,000 people in the area as recently as 2021.

The company said it is “reducing our workforce” to “better position ourselves for long-term profitability and growth,” according to the letter.

It was unclear Thursday how the layoffs might be scattered among GEICO’s offices across the country or how Macon’s office would be impacted, though many local Facebook users were disappointed with the news.

“My money won’t be spent going into 2024 on Geico,” one Facebook user said in the wake of the announcement. “Seems like they have grown plenty if they were able to make almost $14 million bonus while also taking away the majority of the benefits and now the jobs of 2000 people.”

Other users recommended current employees to look at other job listings or start personal businesses.

The letter also announced GEICO would return to in-person work in the near future.

The company has developed a negative reputation with some in the area, spawning critical Facebook pages and comments. A former employee also sued GEICO’s Macon office last year for allegedly violating wage laws.

The Telegraph contacted GEICO Thursday afternoon for comment on the layoffs but did not receive an immediate response.
