Gene Dillon's 'Keepin' It Reel' scores in LEGO League championship

Feb. 15—BEMIDJI — Gene Dillon Elementary's "Keepin' It Reel" found success at the FIRST LEGO League North Dakota State Championship on Feb. 10 at the University of North Dakota.

The team earned first place in robot performance having scored the most points during the robot game.

With program-controlled robots constructed with nothing but Lego bricks, teams compete in at least three two-and-a-half-minute matches to score as many points as possible by completing various missions. A team's highest score determines its placement.

In addition to the game, the team also earned second in the robot design category.

"This team uses outstanding programming principles and solid engineering practices to develop a robot that is mechanically sound, durable, efficient and highly capable of performing challenge missions," the release said.

FIRST LEGO League aims to introduce science, technology, engineering and math to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together, the release added.
