General election early voting kicks off

Oct. 19—HIGH POINT — It's a quick turnaround for residents of High Point and Jamestown as they head back to the polls for general election early voting after completing early voting for the primary less than two weeks ago.

General election early voting begins today and continues through Nov. 4 in races for High Point mayor and City Council and Jamestown Town Council.

In the primary early voting that concluded Oct. 7, turnout was up 37% from the previous municipal primary four years ago, according to the Guilford County Board of Elections. County Elections Director Charlie Collicutt said the stronger turnout reflected candidates working hard to get their voters out early.

Overall turnout for High Point races in the primary when voting concluded on Oct. 10 was 8.3% of all registered voters. While considerably lower than turnout in even-numbered-year elections, the primary turnout was about average historically, Collicutt told The High Point Enterprise.

Collicutt said that a decent turnout when the polls close Nov. 7 would be 17% to 18%, based on historical averages.

"That would be good for a municipal general election," he said.

As was the case during the primary, early voting will start at Washington Terrace Park at 101 Gordon St. Early voting on weekdays at the park will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 through Oct. 26, then expand to 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 through Nov. 3.

Early voting will take place at two other sites later in October — Deep River Recreation Center at 1529 Skeet Club Road and Jamestown Town Hall at 301 E. Main St. Early voting on weekdays at the two sites will take place from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 through Nov. 3.

Residents of High Point and Jamestown will have the option of three days of weekend early voting at all three sites from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28-29, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4.

Election Day for voting at polls across the city will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7.

Statewide, about 465 cities, towns and villages in 86 counties are conducting elections this fall, according to the N.C. State Board of Elections. Among the municipalities in the Piedmont Triad holding local elections are Thomasville, Wallburg and Midway.
