Genshin Impact to get multi-layered map, quality-of-life changes

The developer did not say when they will be adding these features, though they are likely to come in version 4.0 and beyond.

Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse revealed they will be releasing quality-of-life changes to the game, including a multi-layered map, quest menu and tracking optimisations, among others, in the upcoming version 3.8 and 4.0 updates.

HoYoverse unveiled the upcoming quality-of-life changes in an official Developers Discussion posted on Tuesday (20 June).

The most significant of those changes is arguably the multi-layered map, which will allow players to easily view the topography of both above-ground and underground locations. This function will be added in version 4.0.

With the many sprawling underground locations in Sumeru, many players have been clamoring for a way to easily navigate these areas that aren’t shown in the game’s current map.

“Everyone can use the Map to gain more concise details regarding whether they are in a new or unlocked area. Certain areas might be complex in terrain and encompass multiple layers. Travelers can switch across these layers in the Map when the time comes to better view the area,” said HoYoverse.

Another significant change will be an optimised menu display and tracking for in-game quests.

Currently, players can find themselves unable to begin or progress certain quests, especially Story Quests, because characters or locations required for that quest are occupied in another quest. Players will have to progress or complete the latter quest in order to proceed with the quest they wanted to do.

This can cause many problems, such as players being unable to access or progress limited-time event quests before they expire or having an overwhelming backlog of quests that can be difficult to get through due to all of the occupied characters and locations.

To address these concerns, HoYoverse are planning to add a more detailed quest redirection guide as well as separating the unlocking and accepting sections of Story Quests into two steps.

The developer did not say when they will be adding these features, though they are likely to come in version 4.0 and beyond.

HoYoverse added they will continue to develop an overall iterative plan to deal with the preoccupation issue “in the hopes of providing a smoother questing experience for everyone”.

Aside from the above changes, HoYoverse will also be adding a ‘Review Invitation’ function for Hangout Quests in version 3.8.

Permanent game modes?

Finally, the developer also addressed calls from the Genshin Impact community to add more permanent game modes, with many pointing at the ongoing “Divine Ingenuity: Collector's Chapter” event.

HoYoverse said that they have already considered the possibility of making certain events permanent fixtures to the game, but found some of them are not fleshed out enough to support long-term gameplay experience for all players.

With that said, the developer assured players that certain events becoming permanent remain a possibility in Genshin Impact’s future.

“We will combine the feedback from our Travelers regarding event gameplay for future iterations and will release new permanent gameplay options at the right time,” said HoYoverse.

The first of the quality-of-life changes unveiled by HoYoverse will be added in Genshin Impact version 3.8.

The game is currently in the second half of version 3.7, which will run until 4 July, meaning we can expect version 3.8 to come out on 5 July.

Meanwhile, the highly-anticipated version 4.0 is expected to come out in mid-August. Aside from the addition of more quality-of-life changes, Genshin Impact version 4.0 will also see the release of the game’s highly-anticipated fourth region: Fontaine.
