Gentleman Jack has provided us with a promising season 2 update. Suranne Jones is back on set after filming recently got underway again for the groundbreaking period drama.

The BBC One show stars Jones as lesbian pioneer Anne Lister, a woman who pushed back against the conventions of Georgian times and lived in the way she wanted to.

Sophie Rundle is also back as Anne's new wife Ann Walker, with new photos showing the pair on set together.

One of the photos shows the pair walking together, with Jones wearing a grey waistcoat and neckerchief. Rundle is dressed in a pink and grey checked dress.

The BBC and HBO co-production has been adapted by Scott & Bailey writer Sally Wainwright from the real diaries of 17th-century industrialist Anne, who used code to talk about sexual liberation.

The drama was renewed for a second season of eight episodes after just one episode had aired in May 2019, following impressive ratings and a positive response from viewers.

Wainwright spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about the second season and gave us some hints about what we can expect to see unfold for Anne and Ann.

"They move into Shibden together in series two and it's about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well," she said.

If the writer has her way, we'll actually be following Anne and Ann's story for quite some time as she has plenty of ideas for continuing the show thanks to the content of Anne's diaries.

"Obviously we've got season two, which is fantastic, and I hope it will continue on after that," she said. "There's no end of stories, the diaries, this huge wealth of knowledge."

We can also expect to see the return of favourites including Anne's sister Marian (Gemma Whelan), her father Captain Lister (Timothy West) and her aunt Anne (Gemma Jones).

Gentleman Jack season two will air on BBC One. The first season is available on DVD.
