George and Amal Clooney brought together some of the greatest names in Hollywood for their glittering Albie Awards - held to honour “courageous defenders of justice” around the world.

The awards, named after the South African Justice Albie Sachs, who was jailed and exiled for his activism against the apartheid regime, were set up by the Hollywood couple last year to celebrate those who put their lives on the line for justice.

This year’s honorees included an NGO based in war-torn Ukraine and the Iranian journalists whose story about the killing of Mahsa Amini ignited the Woman Life Freedom uprising in Iran.

Hollywood actors Jodie Turner-Smith, Scarlett Johansson, plus Emily Blunt and husband John Krasinski, Barbie director Greta Gerwig, Modern Family actor Sofia Vergara and supermodel Heidi Klum were among the names at the  New York Public Library on Thursday.

The Clooneys themselves led the red carpet arrivals, with lawyer Amal wearing a full length, sparkling white gown next to her husband in a classic tux.

Model Kate Moss, designer Donatella Versace and make-up star Charlotte Tilbury followed in the Clooney’s footsteps with glamorous looks on the red carpet.

Actors Andra Day, Julianne Moore and her husband Bart Freundlich plus Matt Damon and his wife Luciana Barrorso also supported the cause.

Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig andRachel Weisz plus Anne Hathaway also attended.
