George Kittle, Dre Greenlaw ruled out vs. Giants

The 49ers won’t have two more of their starters Sunday vs. the New York Giants. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday said tight end George Kittle and linebacker Dre Greenlaw have both been ruled out for Week 3.

Kittle is still working back from a knee sprain he suffered in the season opener. He stayed in the Bay Area for the 49ers’ game against the Jets last week. The original plan was for the All-Pro to re-join the team at the Greenbrier in West Virginia to possibly play vs. the Giants.

He practiced on a limited basis Thursday and Friday, but he’s either not healthy enough to play or the team has concerns about him testing his knee on the MetLife Stadium turf.

They’ll also be without Greenlaw while he deals with a quad contusion that he suffered late in the 49ers’ win over the Jets. It initially looked like Greenlaw was on track to play after a limited practice Wednesday. He was out of Thursday’s session though, and now he won’t suit up for a game for the first time since he came to the team last year as a fifth-round pick.

Greenlaw and Kittle join a long list of starters San Francisco is missing vs. the Giants, including Richard Sherman, Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, Dee Ford, Deebo Samuel, Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman.
