George Kittle upbeat, but offers no insight on whether he’ll play vs. Giants

George Kittle on Thursday was his typical self when he spoke with reporters via video conference. Matt Barrows of the Athletic offered a detailed account of some of the tight end’s Zoom-related hijinks. While Kittle had fun with some reporters’ video conference aesthetics, he wasn’t ready to open all the way up about his status for Sunday’s game against the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

Kittle missed last week’s game at the same venue against the New York Jets while rehabbing a knee sprain he suffered in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals. He was back in practice Wednesday and had limited work on both Wednesday and Thursday in his first action since getting hurt in the opener.

“The last two days have gone well,” he said via the Athletic. “I just feel better every single day, so that’s awesome. Just being able to go out there and play football again a little bit is great.”

The 49ers have played their hand close to their chest with the tight end and his availability for Week 3. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has all but ruled out quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He hasn’t done the same with Kittle, although he did say the quality of the playing surface at MetLife Stadium would play a role in the team’s decision to put the tight end back in the lineup.

If Kittle is unavailable, chances are we won’t find out until an hour and a half before kickoff when inactives are announced.
