Parking garage feedback sought

The city of Georgetown is asking the public for feedback on options for a downtown parking garage, including location, levels and costs.

Research and recommendations for parking solutions have been informed by City Council discussions and presentations, a Downtown Parking Study from 2015, land-use codes, public engagement about the design, a stakeholder steering committee and the city’s consulting firm, Wantman Group Inc.

In 2021, WGI evaluated potential parking garage sites on a series of criteria, including the overall cost, the number of new parking spaces added, the location, and traffic access and impact.

On Nov. 9, the City Council identified three potential locations for the parking garage: Tamiro Plaza, on the southwest corner of Sixth Street and Austin Avenue; Ninth and Main streets, the entire square block; and Sixth and Main streets, on the southwest corner.

People can share their feedback through a digital survey, available through Dec. 31 at surveymonkey.com/r/GeorgetownParking2021.

Reimers Ranch a Dark Sky Park

The Travis County Commissioners Court has approved a proclamation accepting Milton Reimers Ranch Park’s designation as an International Dark Sky Park.

With this designation, Travis County, in partnership with the International Dark Sky Association, will be able to help protect the night skies. Reimers Ranch Park had to meet several criteria to earn the designation.

The nighttime skies at the park had to be sufficiently free from light pollution to provide impressive views of the stars and the Milky Way Galaxy. The park also had to implement responsible outdoor lighting practices that minimized effects on nocturnal wildlife and the local neighborhood while preserving the views of the starry sky.

Reimers Observatory resumed public programs in November after being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
