Georgetown men, Thomas More women roll into NAIA quarterfinals

The championship dream continues for the Georgetown College men.

The Tigers, making their record 42nd appearance in the NAIA basketball national tournament and in pursuit of their fourth all-time title, advanced to the quarterfinals of this season’s event in Kansas City, Mo., with a 74-60 victory over Langston (Okla.) on Tuesday night.

Former Bowling Green High School standout Kyran Jones delivered 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the No. 3 seed Tigers (29-5) over No. 2 seed Langston (31-3).

Next up for Georgetown was a matchup with No. 1 seed Grace College of Indiana (31-3) on Wednesday night. Grace advanced Tuesday with an 86-67 win over Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.).

Georgetown needed three minutes to score its first points Tuesday and struggled to put the ball in the basket for most of the first half — falling behind Langston 22-12 at one point — but the Tigers roared to life with a 15-0 run to close the first half and go to the locker room with a 27-22 advantage. Cam Brooks-Harris, Jake Ohmer (Scott) and Tae Dozier (Butler) each contributed four points to the outburst.

Georgetown added to the breakaway by scoring the first five points of the second half. The Tigers’ lead grew to as large as 19 points and they never led by less than seven the rest of the way.

Ohmer finished with 17 points, and Brooks-Harris and Tommy Thomas added 10 each for Georgetown.

Thomas More 91, Cumberlands 61: In a battle of teams from Kentucky, the defending national champion Saints again had way too much firepower for the Patriots in the NAIA round of 16 at Sioux City, Iowa.

The victory propelled No. 1 seed Thomas More (29-3) into a quarterfinal contest against No. 3 seed Montana Western (28-5) on Wednesday night.

Cumberlands (24-8) fought gamely early on by outscoring Thomas More 18-13 in the first quarter but it was all Saints thereafter.
