Georgia authorities search for convicted rapist and child molester who was released 'in error' from prison

Police in Georgia are trying to find a man serving a life sentence who was released from prison "in error," according to a statement from the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Tony Maycon Munoz-Mendez, 31, was mistakenly released from Rogers State Prison at 11:30 a.m. Friday. According to records from the Department of Corrections, Munoz-Mendez began serving a life sentence in April 2015.

Munoz-Mendez was convicted of rape and aggravated child molestation.

Spokeswoman Lori Benoit told CNN that the Department of Corrections is reviewing the circumstances surrounding Munoz-Mendez's release. The statement released by the department does not say what led to Munoz-Mendez's release.

Munoz-Mendez is described as 5 feet 9 inches and 186 pounds, according to the Department of Corrections.

"All resources are being utilized to ensure the rapid apprehension of Munoz-Mendez, including the Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Unit and US Marshals," the Department of Corrections said in its statement.
