Georgia football adjusts titles for some assistant coaches on Kirby Smart's staff

Georgia football quietly adjusted some titles for its assistant coaches this spring.

Glenn Schumann is now listed as defensive coordinator with Will Muschamp maintaining his title as co-defensive coordinator, according to the roster update Saturday for the G-Day game on the school’s athletic website.

Schumann was listed last season and in the spring football media guide as co-defensive coordinator along with Muschamp, the former head coach at Florida and South Carolina. Those recent changes are reflected in another listing on the website.

Schumann was listed as defensive coordinator on a list of staff salary changes last month provided by the school, but since Muschamp's compensation didn't change his title wasn't listed. Now Muschamp still has the co-defensive coordinator title.

Tight ends coach Todd Hartley also now has the added title of assistant head coach,

Schumann’s total pay jumped from $805,000 to $1.9 million, the school revealed last month, after interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles for their defensive coordinator opening. Muschamp’s annual salary is $805,000 but could still be adjusted. The two were coordinators for the national champion Bulldogs last season after Dan Lanning became head coach at Oregon.

Schumann is entering his eighth season at Georgia coaching the inside linebackers.

Hartley received a $185,000 raise this offseason to bring his annual pay to $850,000.

He’s coached tight ends since the 2019 season under Kirby Smart and has carved out a reputation of recruiting top talent and developing it including junior All-American Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington, a possible NFL first-round pick this year.

Running backs coach Dell McGee had the title assistant head coach in 2018. He’s now also run game coordinator. James Coley was named assistant head coach when he was demoted from coordinator after the 2019 season but he jumped to Texas A&M.

Matt Luke had the title associate head coach before he stepped down after the 2021 season and Sam Pittman before that before he became Arkansas head coach.
