Georgia football's Nyland Green released on bond after arrest on multiple felony charges

A Georgia football player was arrested Wednesday morning on multiple allegations including three felony charges for damage to property and carrying a weapon in a school safety zone.

Freshman defensive back Nyland Green was booked in the Athens-Clarke County jail at 2:49 a.m. Wednesday. He was released on a $10,000 bond after appearing in court on Wednesday, the Clarke-County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

A national top 100 recruit in the 2021 signing class, Green has appeared in three games and recorded two tackles this season for the No. 1 Bulldogs.

Green was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor reckless conduct, according to the Athens-Clarke County jail records.

According to a University of Georgia police department report, UGA dispatch responded to a complaint at 4:21 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14 about a male near McWhorter Hall on East Campus with what appeared to be a gun and possibly “dry firing” while pointing the gun in the direction of another male.

During the investigation, police determined Green was in possession of a black Beretta BB gun and later that Green also had a tan Colt M45A1 BB gun on school property in his dorm room.

The investigation developed probable cause to pursue three criminal charges — two felony counts of a weapon within school safety zone and one misdemeanor for reckless conduct.

A subsequent report was filed on Nov. 16 after police responded to a call from a UGA employee regarding damage to an exterior window of Busbee Hall and led to additional warrants being sought for Green.

According to the police report, the most outside window pane located on the first floor of Busbee Hall had been shot out by a “very small projectile.” Upon further inspection there “appeared to be a small circular hole consistent with a BB bullet,” police said.

UGA Housing estimated the damage to the window to be $550, according to the police report.

On Nov. 19, police said they spoke to Green via telephone and advised him of warrants for his arrest.

"We have no comment as it is an ongoing legal and university disciplinary matter,” said a UGA athletics spokesperson.

Green is the second UGA defensive player known to have been arrested this season. Linebacker Adam Anderson was arrested and charged after a 21-year-old woman accused him of raping her in an Athens apartment on Oct. 29.
