Georgia football G-Day 2023: What we saw during the Bulldogs annual scrimmage game

Greetings once again from Sanford Stadium for Georgia football's annual G-Day game.

The stadium is undergoing $68.5 million in renovations on the south side so that part of the stands will be empty while the press box there will still be in use before it is relocated for the 2024 season.

The Bulldogs will scrimmage before the general public for the first time this spring with the Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff QB show the main attraction.

Five things to watch: UGA's G-Day spring game in Sanford Stadium

Boom! Why it was the right time to bring on a new Uga for Georgia football games

There are 21 scholarship newcomers added to the roster including three transfers and the players who have moved on since last season will get their national championship rings today.

The collaring ceremony for the new live Bulldog mascot—Boom who becomes Uga XI—is slated before the 4 p.m. start.

What you see today may or may not be a sneak preview of the fall.

AD Mitchell (now at Texas) showed he was the real deal with 7 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in 2021. Oscar Delp had 7 catches for 91 yards on G-Day a year ago which was more than the 5 for 61 he had all last season as a freshman. Darnell Washington is now gone and this may be the year for Delp to move into a prominent role.

6:01 p.m. | Final QB stats on Georgia Bulldogs G-Day

Looks like some of the live updates were wiped out in the second half. Good thing only two scores came after halftime.

The final QB numbers: Carson Beck had the best day, going 15 of 22 for 231 yards and a touchdown. Brock Vandagriff was 13 of 25 for 175 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Gunner Stockton was 13 of 22 for 144 yards and an interception returned 21 yards for a touchdown by Raylen Wilson.

Vandagriff hit Mekhi Mews for a 10-yard touchdown for the final score.

The Red team won 31-26.

4:58 p.m. | Walk-on kicker Liam Badger boots long field goal

Liam Badger, a transfer from Kennesaw State, just booted a 51-yard field goal, to make it 24-16 Red. Seems like a missed opportunity for Wisconsin not to have pursed Badger.

4:52 p.m. | Gunner Stockton gets his chance to shine for Georgia football

Gunner Stockton, the clear No. 3 guy at the QB spot, scored on a 4-yard touchdown run as the Red team leads 21-16 in the second quarter. He's 3 of 6 for 37 yards.

4:41 p.m. | Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff lead TD drives

Carson Beck hit Arian Smith in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown and then Brock Vandagriff answered with the Black team on a scoring drive that ended with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Meeks who stayed on his feet and got pushed in by teammates. It's 21-10 Red.

4:24 p.m. | First-team offense keeps rolling

Carson Beck is 6 of 6 for 124 yards after the first-team offense just marched down field again against the No. 1 defense. Sevaugh Clark gave a stiff-arm to Malaki Starks and scored on a 9-yard touchdown run. It's 14-3 Red.

4:18 p.m. | Freshmen flashing early on defense

Brock Vandagriff led the Black team on a scoring drive that ended with Jared Zirkel booting a 42-yard field goal, but a couple of early enrollee linebackers looked good. Sam M'Pemba had two tackles and CJ Allen one. It's 7-3.

4:09 p.m. | Carson Beck off to a hot start

Carson Beck completed all three of his passes for 63 yards including a 39-yard strike to Brock Bowers. The Red leads 7-0.

4:03 p.m. | Georgia Football gives tribute to Devin Willock, Chandler LeCroy

Remembering Devin and Chandler: How Georgia Football honored Devin Willock, Chandler LeCroy at start of G-Day Game

3:53 p.m. | Hello, UGA XI

Uga X was carried onto the field by his handler Charles Seiler for his retirement ceremony and the collaring of Boom, who becomes Uga XI. He walked across the field as more sprightly nine-month old. It is now official.

3:46 p.m. | The plan for the quarterbacks

Don't get caught up with the jersey colors and teams they are listed on. Coach Kirby Smart said on the pregame radio broadcast that both Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff will get a chance to work with the first-team offense which is the Red team and Gunner Stockton with the second unit which is the Black team.

3:37 p.m. | Spotted on the sideline

Among those on the sideline are safety Chris Smith and wide receiver Kearis Jackson, preparing for their NFL careers. Also here in a No. 8 jersey is Dom Blaylock, the wide receiver who already put his name in the transfer portal. He's getting plenty of hugs from his former teammates and support staffers.

3:28 p.m. | The left tackle rotation

Earnest Greene, the redshirt freshman, is working with the first-team offensive line at left tackle with Austin Blaske going with the second unit. That's a position battle worth watching.

3:18 p.m. | Update on the running backs

Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton (both with hamstring injuries) are dressed out. Let's see if either sees any action today. Andrew Paul, coming off a torn ACL, is also dressed out and working with the running backs in warmups.

2:56 p.m. | ILB Smael Mondon appears out

Georgia inside linebacker Smael Mondon, wearing a jersey and shorts, just was driven by on a golf cart with running back Branson Robinson. Both appear out today. Robinson had a boot on his right foot.

2:38 p.m. | Near capacity (at least for today) crowd

Georgia should come close to selling out its 54,000 tickets available today. There are still some tickets available in the 318-321 section in the East side upper deck. Attendance is limited due to construction on the south side of the stadium.

G-Day drew 68,020 last April.

2:12 p.m. | Here are the G-Day rosters

The G-Day rosters are out.

It's the Red team (first team offense and second team defense) vs. the Black team (first team defense and second team offense).

Carson Beck and Jackson Muschamp are with the first-team offense and Brock Vandagriff, Gunner Stockton and Colin Drake with the second-team offense.

The first-team offensive line: Austin Blaske, Earnest Greene, Amarius Mims, Tate Ratledge, Xavier Truss and Sedrick Van Pran-Granger. The wide receivers with the ones include Dillon Bell, Dominic Lovett, Ladd McConkey, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Arian Smith and CJ Smith. Brock Bowers and Oscar Delp are among first-team tight ends.

Mike Bobo is coaching the first-team with Will Muschamp among the defensive coaches.

The Black team first-team defense includes DBs Javon Bullard, David Daniel-Sisavanh, Nyland Green, Kamari Lassiter, Tykee Smith and Malaki Starks. The first-team outside linebackers are Chaz Chambliss and CJ Madden. Bear Alexander despite the news he's transferring is listed with the first-team defensive line along with Warren Brinson, Zion Logue, Nazir Stackhouse and Tramel Walthour.

Glenn Schumann is among those coaching the Black defense.

1:30 p.m. | RB thinned even more for G-Day

Georgia already is missing Kendall Milton due to a hamstring injury and Daijun Edwards has been out for parts of the spring with his own hamstring injury.

Now it appears that sophomore running back Branson Robinson won't go today. He's dealing with a lower extremity injury, per DawgsHQ. Andrew Paul is still working his way back from a torn ACL.

That means plenty of freshman Roderick Robinson and walk-ons Sevaughn Clark, Cash Jones, Joseph Daniels and Miles Thornton.

G-Day is usually about airing it out in the passing game anyway.
