Georgia hosts 'Super Museum Sunday' on Super Bowl Sunday, offering free admission.

The state of Georgia is offering a day-trip adventure in the hours before the 58th showing of the Super Bowl on Feb. 11.

The State Historic Sites is offering free admission to museums statewide in celebration of “Super Museum Sunday.” Parks across the state that have museums will open more than a dozen.

While some are in faraway places like Savannah, four are less than a two-hour drive from the Athens area, depending on where one lives.

Some of the local parks opening museum for the free visit are:

  • The Dahlonega Gold Museum is located on the town square in the former Lumpkin County Courthouse. It tells the story of how the gold rush occurred in Georgia and how it contributed to the Trail of Tears.

  • The Hardman Farm at Sautee-Nacoochee was built in 1870 by Capt. James Nichols and is an example of Italianate architecture. A gazebo-topped Indian mound is in a nearby pasture. The farm, normally closed in February, will open this day.

  • The Traveler’s Rest in Toccoa is a 1833 plantation home that in its past accommodated travelers in northeast Georgia in the mid-1800s.

  • Liberty Hall at A.H. Stephens State Park in Crawfordville is the 1875 home of the Confederate vice president and is fully furnished and contains collections of Civil War artifacts.
