Georgia men's basketball team makes verbal commitment to Savannah tournament in 2023

Georgia Bulldogs fans in Savannah likely won't have to travel far to see the men's basketball team in action in the near future.

The UGA squad has verbally committed to compete in an annual college basketball tournament at Enmarket Arena in November 2023, according to the executive director of the Savannah Sports Council.

Rob Wells said Friday that Oak View Group, which operates the arena, informed him that Georgia and Xavier, a strong national program in Cincinnati, Ohio, have verbally committed to the second annual tournament in 2023.

Mike White, the new head coach of the Georgia men's basketball team, has expressed interest in playing games in parts of the state outside of Athens. The Bulldogs have a neutral-site game against Notre Dame on Dec. 18 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

A spokesperson for the UGA athletic department said Friday that it had no comment at this time. If UGA does sign the contract and comes to Savannah, it could be the men's squad's first contest outside of Athens and Atlanta since playing Mercer in Macon in December 2010.
