Georgia’s oldest restaurant opened it doors over 100 years ago
GEORGIA (WRBL) — You can find most types of cuisine in the Peach State.
But about 150 miles south of Columbus, one restaurant holds the unique title of “Georgia’s Oldest Restaurant.”
Down in Thomasville, Plaza Restaurant & Oyster Bar is a local favorite stemming back to 1916. The spot’s held a variety of owners who have typically been of Greek heritage, according to the website.
Although 100 years may seem like a lot, the restaurant is actually young compared to some establishments in the nation. At 351 years old, White Horse Tavern in Rhode Island holds the current record.
In fact, even one of Georgia’s neighbors has the state beat — if we hop over to Scottsboro, Alabama, we’ll find a shop that opened it’s doors all the way back in 1869.
Payne’s Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain is about four hours away from the Chattahoochee Valley. The menu is classic, vintage American fare with dishes ranging from potato salad to banana splits.
