It's election day in Georgia and voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots in local and statewide primary and nonpartisan races.

Locally, four candidates look to unseat incumbent Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz. Voters will decide who will fill three Clarke County school board, as well as several Clarke and Oconee County commission seats, choose a District 47 state senator and decide on the renewal of the 1% Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST).

In statewide contests, incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp is being challenged by former Sen. David Perdue in the Republican primary, while six Republicans, including former University of Georgia football star Herschel Walker, are battling in the primary to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock in the Nov. 8 general election.

7:40 p.m. | Polls close, ballot error affects 17

A previously noted ballot mistake was reported to the elections office affecting residents on Hunnicutt Drive yet again.

Last week, the elections office reported two errors on ballots, including one mistake for residents on Hunnicutt Drive. Those residents live in Commission District 5. However, they were assigned to District 2. The District 5 seat is on the ballot this year, while District 2 is not.

Background: Ahead of primary election, Athens’ elections office discovered errors on 86 ballots

At least nine voters were affected by the mistake during early voting, including seven in-person voters and two absentee voters. Under Georgia law, those voters cannot change or recast their votes.

On Election Day, it was discovered that this mistake was still present on ballots, affecting 17 more voters, according to Rocky Raffle, chair of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections and appointee of the Democratic Party.

Raffle said that he was notified of this error at 5 p.m., two hours before polls closed. Raffle added that it was around 4:30 p.m. that the error was discovered.

Raffle said that the correction was sent to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, but on Election Day, the correction didn’t make it to the check-in devices at the precinct.

“It was supposed to have been fixed, but the secretary's office did not fix it,” Raffle said.
