Georgia runoff results – live: Warnock’s win cements Democrats 2024 blueprint as women celebrate Walker’s loss

Democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock sailed to victory over Republican challenger Herschel Walker on Tuesday night as the two candidates went head-to-head in the runoff race for Georgia’s crucial Senate seat.

The race was called in Mr Warnock’s favour at around 10.30pm, sending him to Washington DC for a full six-year term and giving Democrats a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

Following Mr Walker’s defeat, several of his former partners and the football star’s son celebrated the election results.

One woman who had a relationship with him in 2006 told The Daily Beast that it spelled a victory for the many women who had come forward to accuse him of encouraging them to have abortions or of being absent from his children’s lives – claims that directly contradicted the stance Mr Walker ran on.

“The Senate race tonight not only vindicates that democracy has won but the women that he betrayed, have won,” she said.

In a lengthy Twitter thread, Mr Walker’s son Christian Walker also branded his father “pathetic” and claimed that he had ignored everyone but Donald Trump around whether or not he should have ran.

What to watch for in today’s election

Tuesday 6 December 2022 22:00 , Oliver O'Connell

The results of the AP VoteCast survey illustrate some of the challenges each candidate faces on Tuesday.

Herschel Walker will need to turn out a GOP base that wasn’t enamored with him to start with, and do it without the more popular Governor Brian Kemp on the ballot.

Raphael Warnock must get his coalition of some lower-propensity voting groups to turn out.

And both candidates have to motivate voters despite a predetermined balance of power in Washington.

A stark choice for Black voters

Tuesday 6 December 2022 22:20 , Oliver O'Connell

Black voters say the choice is stark: Warnock, the senior minister of Martin Luther King’s Atlanta church, echoes traditional liberal notions of the Black experience; and Walker, a University of Georgia football icon, speaks the language of white cultural conservatism and mocks Warnock’s interpretations of King, among other matters.

What influence does Trump have on today’s race?

Tuesday 6 December 2022 23:00 , Oliver O'Connell

Donald Trump remains the de facto leader of the Republican Party, meaning its elected officials must answer for every egregious statement or call to subvert the law he makes. The difference is that now, after two impeachments and suffering a crushing loss in 2020, he no longer offers them many benefits. Rather, every utterance he makes reminds voters why they don’t vote for Republicans.

Nowhere is this clearer than in Georgia’s Senate runoff, writes Eric Garcia.

DoJ to monitor polls in Georgia for compliance with federal voting rights laws

Tuesday 6 December 2022 23:20 , Oliver O'Connell

The Justice Department plans to monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in four counties in Georgia today, the department said in a statement.

Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, the Civil Rights Division has regularly monitored elections in the field in jurisdictions around the country to protect the rights of voters. The Civil Rights Division enforces the federal voting rights laws that protect the rights of all citizens to access the ballot.

For this election, the Civil Rights Division will monitor for compliance with the federal voting rights laws on Election Day in four jurisdictions: Cobb County, Fulton County, Gwinnett County, and Macon-Bibb County. Monitors will include personnel from the Civil Rights Division and from the US Attorneys’ Offices.

The Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section enforces the civil provisions of federal statutes that protect the right to vote, including the Voting Rights Act, the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, the National Voter Registration Act, the Help America Vote Act, and the Civil Rights Acts.

What time will we know the results?

Tuesday 6 December 2022 23:40 , Oliver O'Connell

Polls in Georgia open at 7:00 am and close at 7:00 pm on Tuesday. Voters who are still in line by 7:00 pm will still be allowed to vote.

Results of the race will likely be known earlier than in the 2021 runoff, due largely to the fact that many voters have already cast their ballot.

Did Herschel Walker ever really live in Georgia?

Wednesday 7 December 2022 00:30 , Josh Marcus

Herschel Walker, the scandal-plagued Republican candidate in the Senate runoff election in Georgia, said he lives in Texas in a newly unearthed recording.

In a January speech to the University of Georgia’s College Republicans, the former football star stated plainly, “I live in Texas,” despite competing against Democrat Raphael Warnock for Georgia’s US Senate seat.

“Everyone asks me, why did I decide to run for a Senate seat? Because to be honest with you, this is never something I ever, ever, ever thought in my life I’d ever do,” Mr Walker told the club, according to a report from CNN’s KFILE.

The revelation follows a previous CNN report that Mr Walker claimed a tax break on his multi-million dollar Texas home in 2021 and 2022 intended for primary residents, saving himself an estimated $1,500 and potentially running afoul of both Texas tax law and Georgia election procedures.

What the Georgia runoff says about race in the US

Wednesday 7 December 2022 01:10 , Josh Marcus

The runoff between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker may involve a contest between two Black men, but some commentators argue the election is deeply symbolic about where the Democratic and Republican parties stand on race.

In 2020, Georgia went for Joe Biden, the first time the state sent a Democrat to the White House in three decades.

Due to local dynamics and pervasive voter disenfranchisement, until recently, the state’s majority Black population wasn’t able to elect a Democrat, even though African-Americans are the base of the party.

Perhaps sensing a red state slipping into the purple category, the GOP found a Black candidate in Walker who was both extremely popular in Georgia due to his college and pro football career, and deeply conservative.

It didn’t matter that he often struggled with basic policy questions or was dogged with continous scandals from his personal life.

To commentators like Caroline Randall Williams, the Republican party is knowingly using Walker to reach Black voters, even though the GOP in her view has abandoned the policy choices that would make America more equitable and less unjust on racial lines.

“Walker’s candidacy is a fundamental assault by the Republican Party on the dignity of Black Americans,” she wrote in The Atlantic today. “How dare they so cynically use this buffoon as a shield for their obvious failings to meet the needs and expectations of Black voters? They hold him up and say, ‘See, our voters don’t mind his race. We’re not a racist party. We have Black people on our side too.’”

Here’s more from The Independent about how identity factored into this election.

Early voting in Georgia runoff blows past state turnout records

Wednesday 7 December 2022 01:30 , Josh Marcus

The Georgia runoff will be remebered for a lot of things – the way it tested Donald Trump’s lasting influence of the GOP, the parade of Herschel Walker scandals – and that should include high turnout.

According to Georgia data, on Friday, the day of early voting, 352,953 people cast their choice, beating the past one-day record by nearly 50,000.

“Georgia is a national leader in voter access and security,” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a statement. “We are having historic levels of turnout and those who want to vote are voting- we believe this level of voter participation is excellent, and we’ll keep working with counties to encourage them to open more Early Voting locations in the future.”

The scandal that rocked the Walker-Warnock Senate race

Wednesday 7 December 2022 01:50 , Josh Marcus

The Senate runoff race between Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock was about more than just politics and policy.

The contest hinged in part on what voters thought personally about the two men, and whether they would factor a non-stop train of scandals relating to Mr Walker into their vote.

Two past partners accused Mr Walker, a staunch anti-abortion Republican, of urging them to get the procedure and even paying for it.

Here’s our reporting on what happened, courtesy of Eric Garcia.

Raphael Warnock’s campaign secret weapon: Obama

Wednesday 7 December 2022 02:10 , Josh Marcus

Former president Barack Obama tends to take a much more lowkey role in congressional races than people like Donald Trump, who regularly opines on the latest news and annoints his chosen candidates.

Still, Mr Obama headed to Georgia in the final moments of the Senate runoff race to support Raphael Warnock.

In a stirring speech, the former president cast Mr Warnock’s pursuit of the Senate as part of a larger history of fighting for civil rights and Black advancement in America.

“If the men and women who had to endure the sting of discrimination, the smack of billy clubs, weren’t tired, if the folks who had to fight those early fights – those were the tough fights – for union rights and voting rights and gay rights and women’s rights, if they didn’t get tired, you can’t be tired,” he recently told a crowd. “So you gotta go out there and keep working.” “Not only will we reelect Raphael Warnock, not only will we keep Georgia and America on path to better future, but we will be setting an example for a four-year-old right there,” Mr Obama continued.

Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia flipped two counties on Tuesday evening that he lost in November as more votes pour in from the state’s runoff election.

In November, Republican nominee Herschel Walker narrowly won Baldwin County by 0.6 of the vote. But as on Tuesday evening, with 95 per cent of all counties reporting, Mr Warnock won it with 1.1 per cent of the vote.

Mr Warnock won Baldwin in his runoff election against Senator Kelly Loeffler on 5 January 2021, but by 4 per cent of the vote.

Incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock won re-election in a hard-fought Georgia runoff on Tuesday, expanding his party’s razor-thin majority as he turned back a challenge by Republican former football star Herschel Walker.

The Associated Press and other US outlets have now projected the result of the race in the Democrat’s favour, some three-and-a-half hours after polls officially closed at 7pm in Georgia.

With 94 per cent of the expected vote counted, Edison also projected that Warnock had won reelection.

Did Trump tank the GOP’s chances in Georgia?

Wednesday 7 December 2022 04:00 , Josh Marcus

If Herschel Walker loses the Georgia Senate runoff, many will be quick to blame Donald Trump for endorsing him — and for opening up a lane of outrageous, celebrity-first politics Walker is clearly drawing from.

However, as Independent DC bureau chief Eric Garcia argues, the rest of the party enabled Walker too.

“It’d be easy for Republicans to blame Trump for backing Herschel Walker, but it wasn’t just Trump,” Eric wrote on Twitter. “Mitch McConnell backed him, John Thune backed him. Rick Scott campaigned for him. Nearly every GOP elite got behind him.”

Here’s an in-depth look at the question, from the Independent Voices section.

On Thursday, former president Barack Obama made one final visit to Atlanta to campaign for Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock ahead of Tuesday’s runoff election.

Warnock claims victory in Georgia Senate runoff

Wednesday 7 December 2022 05:14 , Shweta Sharma

Raphael Warnock claimed victory in Georgia’s Senate runoff election to a cheering crowd at the Democrat’s election night party.

“Thank you Georgia!” Mr Warnock, a Baptist preacher, said. “I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, and to God be the glory.

“And after a hard-fought campaign — or should I say campaigns — it is my honor to utter the four most powerful words ever spoken in a democracy: The people have spoken.

“Let’s celebrate for a little while on this mountain. Let’s dance because we deserve it. But tomorrow we go back down into the valley to do the work,” he told a cheering crowd of supporters.

Paying tribute to his mother Verlene Warnock, he said: “She grew up in the 1950s in Waycross, Georgia, picking somebody else’s cotton and somebody else’s tobacco,” he said.

“I’m a conservative. I’m a conservative because I feel like it’s the best way to govern. I’ve been a Republican a lot longer than a lot of folks,” Mr Duncan said to CBS News.

“I think I’ve got kids probably that could articulate the conservative platform better than some of the candidates that Donald Trump and his group supported all across the country.

Walker’s former partners celebrate his defeat

Wednesday 7 December 2022 10:40 , Rachel Sharp

Following Herschel Walker’s defeat to Raphael Warnock, several of his former partners spoke out to celebrate the election results.

Another woman, who claims that Mr Walker paid for her to have an abortion, said: “Georgia made their choice today. Herschel will not be their voice. Your votes matter. Your voice matters. When we as a country demand more of our leaders, we will be heard!”

During his campaign, Mr Walker sought to paint an image of himself as a family man and vowed to oppose abortion – without any exceptions.

This image was shattered when several women came forward to claim that he had fathered multiple children alongside his son Christian but had kept them secret and played no role in their lives.

Then, in October, one woman who has a child with the football star spoke out to claim that Mr Walker had paid for her to have an abortion. The woman had receipts, a check from Mr Walker and a “get well” card as evidence.

A second woman also came forward alleging he encouraged her to get an abortion. Mr Walker denied the allegations.

What Warnock’s win means for Democrats:

Wednesday 7 December 2022 11:00 , Rachel Sharp

Raphael Warnock’s victory also means that Democrats held every Senate seat that was up for re-election this cycle despite general dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s performance. Democrats defended incumbents in Arizona, Nevada and New Hampshire and also flipped an open Senate seat in Pennsylvania, when John Fetterman beat television doctor Mehmet Oz.

The 51-49 margin in the Senate also means that Senate committees will no longer be evenly split between Democrats and Republicans and that Democrats will have full subpoena power.

Still, Democrats will likely still be limited in what they can accomplish since Republicans flipped the House of Representatives by a narrow margin. In addition, they do not have enough votes to abolish the filibuster- the 60-vote threshhold - since conservative Democratic Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona oppose doing so along with every other Republican Senator.

With Herschel Walker’s loss in Georgia, Trump’s record sinks for winning in swing states where he endorsed candidates

Wednesday 7 December 2022 11:30 , Johanna Chisholm

Ahead of the 2022 midterms, Donald Trump touted himself as a kingmaker for the Republican Party.

Now, with Georgia’s Senate runoff election finally coming to a close as Democrat Sen Raphael Warnock became the projected winner on Tuesday night, a full post-mortem of the former president’s endorsements can be tabulated.

According to Allan Smith, a political reporter with NBC News, of the 16 races for governor, senator and secretary of state held in swing states that Joe Biden won, only two of the one term president’s endorsed candidates took home a victory - Joe Lombardo beat out his Democratic rival in Nevada’s governor race and Ron Johnson won the Senate race in Wisconsin.

With Trump-backed Herschel Walker losing in the Georgia Senate runoff on Tuesday, that makes for a total of 14 defeats in competitive races for the former president.

Trump-endorsed Herschel Walker’s confounding campaign hits a dead end. What’s next for the GOP football star?

Wednesday 7 December 2022 12:35 , Johanna Chisholm

Herschel Walker ends his time running for Senate as a shadow of the University of Georgia football legend that most Georgians loved. His propensity for nonsensical remarks have become the subject of Saturday Night Live sketches and his race cautionary tale that the political arena differs vastly from Sanford Stadium in Athens. The Associated Press projected that Mr Warnock defeated Mr Walker around 10.30pm ET on Tuesday.

The fact Mr Walker even made it to a runoff is a testament to how underwhelming of a candidate he is. Georgia law stipulates that a candidate must win a majority of the vote and if a candidate doesn’t win a majority in November, they go into a runoff.

But Governor Brian Kemp and Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans whom Donald Trump loathed for not overturning the 2020 election results, won re-election in November with ease. Mr Kemp easily did away with liberal hero Stacey Abrams with 53.4 per cent of the vote, giving a boost to Mr Walker – though not quite enough.

Mr Walker for his part, underperformed Mr Kemp by 4.9 points and now has lost the runoff race. That alone makes it unlikely that he will have much of a future in GOP politics.

Here, Andrew Feinberg and Erica Garcia postulate what may be next for the GOP football star.

What top Democrats are saying about Warnock’s win

Wednesday 7 December 2022 13:30 , Johanna Chisholm

After Sen Raphael Warnock was declared the victor in Tuesday night’s runoff Senate election, the kind words from his fellow Democrats began pouring in.

“Tonight Georgia voters stood up for our democracy, rejected Ultra MAGAism, and most importantly: sent a good man back to the Senate. Here’s to six more years,” said US President Joe Biden.

Georgia voters said they wanted a Senator who would fight for them—and made it a reality when they reelected @ReverendWarnock to the U.S. Senate. Congratulations, my friend,” tweeted vice president Kamala Harris, surely enthused to have her duties as tie breaker in the Senate reprieved after Sen Warnock’s win tipped the Democrats margins to a 51-49 majority.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed that enthusiasm, tweeting: “Senator Warnock’s well-earned victory is a victory for Georgia, and a victory for democracy and against MAGA Republican extremist policies.”

GOP strategist puts Georgia in the ‘blue column’ if Trump nominee

Wednesday 7 December 2022 14:00 , Oliver O'Connell

Republican strategist Matt Whitlock, who previously worked for now-retired Utah Sen Orrin Hatch, said that he believes that Herschel Walker’s loss in Georgia on Tuesday night proves that the traditionally red state is more likely to be in the “blue column” if Donald Trump is on the ballot.

“Should’ve been clear in the 2020 election and runoffs and even clearer when Kemp trounced his primary opponent earlier this year — Georgia has grown impervious to President Trump’s charms. If he’s on a future ballot there I’d count the state in the blue column (again),” tweeted Mr Whitlock.

Maggie Haberman shares Trump quote after Walker loss

Wednesday 7 December 2022 14:30 , Johanna Chisholm

Maggie Haberman, New York Times reporter and author of Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, reupped a quote from her recent book about the former president the day after his endorsed candidate in Georgia Senate runoff - Herschel Walker - loss to the Democratic incumbent.

“Trump told me in Sept 2021 for CONFIDENCE MAN that Herschel Walker’s personal history - one that included allegations of abuse - would not hinder him electorally because “the world is changing.” Walker kept the race close, but performed worse than other Rs statewide,” tweeted Ms Haberman, the day after the Georgia runoff.

Marjorie Taylor Greene slams Bolton and defends Trump after Walker loss

Wednesday 7 December 2022 15:00 , Oliver O'Connell

Former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton put the blame for the Republican Senate defeat in Georgia squarely on Donald Trump after the race was called for Raphael Warnock over Herschel Walker.

He tweeted: “The outcome in Georgia is due primarily to Trump, who cast a long shadow over this race. His meddling and insistence that the 2020 election was stolen will deliver more losses. Trump remains a huge liability and the Democrat’s best asset. It’s time to disavow him and move on.”

Trump-loyalist, Georgia Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene jumped to the defence of the former president but appeared to then blame Mr Walker’s campaign surrogates who often appeared alongside him on the campaign trail.

She tweeted in response to Mr Bolton: “This has to be the dumbest assessment of our Senate loss. His campaign told Trump to stay out, so don’t blame Trump. Blame the one who was hand holding him all over the state, among many other reasons.”

While Ms Greene did not name any specific individuals, anti-Trump Republican group The Lincoln Project was happy to help point the finger of blame at senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz.

How did turnout in the runoff compare to November?

Wednesday 7 December 2022 16:30 , Oliver O'Connell

Taking a deep look at the numbers, Steve Kornacki, national political correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC, finds that turnout in Georgia for the runoff election was 90 per cent of November’s level.

Notably, five of the six counties where it lagged the most are among the largest Republican-leaning counties in the state. However, some Democrat-leaning counties were also lower than the average such as Fulton County at 87 per cent, though DeKalb County had a better turnout that the average and produced a greater Democrat plurality.

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham frustrated with GOP over Georgia runoff

Wednesday 7 December 2022 16:50 , Oliver O'Connell

Fox News host Laura Ingraham vented her frustration at the Republican Party leadership after the network called the Georgia runoff for Democrat Raphael Warnock on Tuesday night.

Speaking with guest conservative author Mollie Hemingway, Ingraham said: “We felt this coming. To me, it never felt like the Senate Republicans wanted this guy in office. He was a Trump pick and they didn't like that.”

She decried the lack of intensity on the part of the party organisation, namely the Republican National Committee under the leadership of Ronna McDaniel.

“We don’t change anything,” Ingraham continued. “We have the same people in place in leadership, same people in place apparently at the RNC, perhaps that’s not changing. But we just keep doing the same thing over and over again. I’m pissed tonight, frankly. I’m mad.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene takes aim at Senate Republicans after Georgia loss

Wednesday 7 December 2022 18:50 , Oliver O'Connell

Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene lashed out at Senate Republicans after Herschel Walker lost his Senate race in Georgia.

"This is for Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham and the rest of the Republican senators; you guys are the reasons why we are losing Republican races all over the country,” Ms Greene said during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s show on Real America’s Voice. “And this is your third loss in my home state. So, let me inform you on behalf of Georgia, this is your third strike and you're out!”

“I was never asked very often by the Herschel Walker campaign to come speak at any of his campaign events,” she said. “They only asked me to maybe two I think. Two or three in my own district when he was campaigning all over the state, running for Senate. But they only asked me a couple of times in my own district, which I find extremely insulting.”

After running through her personal history in the state, she added: “The audacity and really frank rudeness of the campaign consultants and Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham where they thought, you know, we're going to keep Marjorie Taylor Greene away from Herschel Walker and we don't need her voice at his campaign rallies and events where we're campaigning all over the state, I think is really a major mistake and an insult to me and insult to people who support me and Republicans all over Georgia.”

A 51-seat Senate for Democrats, and much more

For Senate Democrats, an oh-so-slim 51-49 majority never sounded so good.

Sen. Raphael Warnock’s victory in swing-state Georgia gives Democrats a welcome “lift,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday at the Capitol -- newly confident of sidelining Trump-inspired Republicans in Congress and reaching across the aisle to other GOP lawmakers to deliver on bipartisan priorities with President Joe Biden.

“If we can get some bipartisan things done, it will of course be better for the country. And it will be better for the Republican Party,” he said.
