Georgia shut out by Oklahoma, eliminated from WCWS
Jun. 5—Georgia could not find an answer for Oklahoma's prolific offense, losing 8-0 in six innings Saturday in an elimination game of the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
The Sooners (51-3), who came in having outscored their opposition 592-99 and hit 147 home runs, homered three times against the Bulldogs (34-23).
It was a bounce-back effort for top-seeded Oklahoma, which was stunned by unseeded James Madison in the first round, held to a season-low three runs. The Sooners also got revenge for a 7-6 loss to Georgia on April 20 in Athens, snapping a 40-game winning streak.
After a scoreless first inning, Oklahoma got on the board in the top of the second when Mackenzie Donihoo hit a two-out, two-run homer off Georgia starter Mary Wilson Avant (20-12).
Oklahoma added to the lead in the fourth as Donihoo singled and Jayda Coleman scored on a throwing error by left fielder Sydney Chambley, then extended the lead to 6-0 on Kinzie Hansen's two-run homer in the fifth. It was Hansen's 22nd homer.
Jocelyn Alo's two-run homer in the top of the sixth — her NCAA-leading 31st of the season — made it 8-0, and Georgia could not respond in the bottom half, bringing the run rule into effect.
Oklahoma starter Giselle Juarez (19-1) held Georgia to three hits — two by Lacey Fincher and one by former Harrison High School star Jaiden Fields — and struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings.
Oklahoma moved on to face UCLA in another elimination game Saturday night, while Georgia's improbable postseason run came to an end. The Bulldogs only went 7-17 in Southeastern Conference play, but they were granted an at-large bid to the NCAA regionals.
Coming in with a seven-game losing streak, Georgia got past Western Kentucky and Duke in the regional round, then swept Florida with a pair of shutouts in the super regional.
