STATESBORO — Georgia Southern is hosting Marshall at 6 p.m. Saturday at Paulson Stadium after one of the Eagles' worst performances this season on Nov. 10.

Clay Helton saw there were corrections to make after host Louisiana used a 20-7 second quarter to surge to a 36-17 victory, but the Eagles' first-year coach wasn't going to make excuses.

"I tell our coaches all the time, they don't pay us to make excuses," Helton said Monday. "They pay us to find answers."

The game was played on a Thursday night in Lafayette, and Georgia Southern had a travel day as part of a short week. In addition, a spate of injuries in the game ended the seasons for long snapper Mark Langston (ACL), defensive lineman Latrell Bullard (meniscus tear) and wide receiver Derwin Burgess Jr. (leg bone).

The receiving group already was thinned by the losses earlier this season of Sam Kenerson and Amare Jones. Starter Jeremy Singleton (low ankle sprain) played sparingly.

Not excuses for the way the team played, Helton said.

"If you have injuries, you've trained another man to walk in there and play. Let him go play," Helton said. "If it's a short week, the other team has a short week. There are no excuses.

"We didn't play to our capability," he continued. "I thought we had a great week of prep. I was really surprised about our second quarter there and it getting away from us. Don't expect it to happen again. But there's no excuses, whether it's a short week or injuries, we're paid a lot of money to win football games, so let's go win a football game."

Georgia Southern entered Saturday's game at 5-5 overall, 2-4 in the Sun Belt Conference and looking for a sixth win this season to become bowl eligible. Marshall (6-4, 3-3 SBC) also was seeking a victory to cement its bowl status, as two of the wins are against FCS opponents.
