Series history
The series is renewed with Marshall's entry this year into the Sun Belt Conference. The teams have met six times, with Georgia Southern winning in 1989 and 1990, and Marshall winning the next four (1993-96) for a 4-2 advantage.
The Thundering Herd is 2-1 against the Eagles in Statesboro, and also played the 1991 NCAA Divison I-AA national championship game at Paulson Stadium, losing to Youngstown State.
Game notes
Georgia Southern is dealing with injuries, particularly at wide receiver, where standout Derwin Burgess Jr. (leg bone injury) is out for the season. Burgess, long snapper Mark Langston (ACL) of Savannah and defensive lineman Latrell Bullard (meniscus tear) all were hurt in the loss last week at Louisiana and are out for the rest of 2022.
Another starting receiver, Jeremy Singleton, has been limited by a low ankle sprain. On a much brighter note, senior Khaleb Hood caught six passes at Louisiana to move into first place in GS program history for single-season receptions (66) and career catches (140). Hood, who wears No. 7, is ranked seventh in the SBC in receiving (75.3 yards per game; 66 receptions for 753 yards and two TDs).

They said it
Georgia Southern head coach Clay Helton on Marshall:
"I think they really play to their defense. I think they do a tremendous job of protecting the football. They are run, RPO-based first- and second-down team that will take shots. I think the quarterback does exactly what they want him to do, take the advantage throws when they're there. They lean on that really good run game that they have, and they play to a stellar defense."
Georgia Southern sixth-year defensive end Justin Ellis on the urgency to win:
"We have to go 1-0 every week. That's what we think about. I'm not thinking ahead at all about App State (on Nov. 26) or anything like that. It's what are we doing this week to go 1-0 and win this game. Being honest, being a defensive player on the team the past two weeks, we've gotten embarrassed in the run game. ... That's going to have to change this week. If we can shut down the run, we'll win this game. That's what it'll come down to."run, we'll win this game.
