Georgia teen dies after she and her brother were pulled from an apartment pool

A 16-year-old Georgia girl has died after she and her 9-year-old brother were pulled from an apartment complex swimming pool on Monday, according to local law enforcement.

The children had been playing in the pool Monday afternoon at an apartment complex in Johns Creek, a city in Fulton County located just under 30 miles northeast of Atlanta. A witness who noticed that both of the siblings had been underwater for too long ran to get help from the apartment's offices, the Johns Creek Police Department said in a news release posted on Facebook Monday.

Three men rushed to their aid, pulling both the children from the pool, police said.

The boy was resuscitated at the scene and is expected to fully recover, while the girl was taken by helicopter to Children's Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, police said.

Johns Creek Police Lt. Deb Coble confirmed to USA TODAY on Wednesday that the girl died Tuesday from her injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the girl's death while awaiting autopsy results, Coble said.

"Though it appears it's a tragic accident, they're still investigating," Coble said.
