Georgia vs. TCU title game caps an unforgettable college football bowl season | D'Angelo

The college football season ends Monday night with a championship game in which Georgia is a two-touchdown favorite over TCU.

Forget those betting lines. Forget the bluebloods sitting at home — some idiot talking head actually said he'd rather see Georgia playing Alabama. Forget the naysayers who whine about the postseason, saying there are too many bowl games — don't watch!

Considering what we've been treated to this bowl season, including the greatest day in college football history, tune into this game and enjoy, no matter the outcome.

I don't care if its 6-3, 52-51 or 45-0. This caps what has turned into the best bowl season in recent memory, one with more drama and storylines than teams desperate to join the Big Ten or SEC.

If Monday's game comes down to a last-second kick or two-point conversion attempt stuffed an inch short of the goal line, all the better. If not …

That will not take away from the wildly entertaining college football postseason we have witnessed.

Here are a few of the highlights and storylines:

Happy New Year

Nothing like this has ever happened in college football, and probably never in any sport.

Ohio State's Noah Ruggles lined up for a 50-yard field goal that would have put Ohio State into the title game. Not only was the game clock winding down, but the clock on 2022 also was winding down.

What followed was an extraordinary sequence with Ruggles striking the ball in 2022 and it landing in 2023, wide left. Those four seconds meant the difference between Georgia wildly celebrating the new year after a 42-41 victory and Ohio State starting 2023 on a very sour note.

Greatest (college football) day ever

That kick culminated in an unforgettable day. Finally, the playoffs lived up to the hype and both semifinals were instant classics.

TCU and Michigan combined for 79 points in the second half of their playoff game, including one 8:25 stretch in which eight touchdowns were scored, four by each team. That game, won by TCU 51-45, led into the Georgia-Ohio State thriller.

In the end, we got two games with 179 points and 2,016 yards.

Not great to be a Florida Gator

Not everyone will agree it was a great bowl season. Take Florida for instance.

The Gators were embarrassed by Oregon State 30-3 in the Las Vegas Bowl — and were mocked for kicking a 40-yard field goal in the final seconds to extend their consecutive game-scoring streak. But watching each of their biggest rivals celebrate added to the misery.

Florida State and Tennessee won the Cheez-It and Orange bowls. Georgia, playing for a second consecutive national title, is light years ahead of the Gators, win or lose Monday. Meanwhile, Florida is coming off a second consecutive losing season.

SEC softies

Nobody piles up non-conference wins against inferior opponents like the SEC. TCU coach Sonny Dykes pointed that out before facing Michigan, not knowing a game against Georgia for a national championship was in his future.

Dykes was explaining the difficulty of playing a nine-game conference schedule, as all teams in the Big 12 do, as opposed to the eight-game model, like the SEC.

“We don't have the good fortune to play an out-of-conference game like the SEC does in Week 10 or Week 11," he said. "You're not going to catch The Citadel in Week 10. We caught Texas.”

Here's a sampling of SEC opponents the weekend before Thanksgiving: Austin Peay, East Tennessee State, UMass, Western Kentucky, New Mexico State and UAB.

Oh, and Vanderbilt also caught a break that weekend by playing Florida.

Kiffin's irresponsible accusation

Next time Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin attempts to smear a young man's reputation, he might want to have some proof or at least be certain about the accusation.

Kiffin hinted that a Texas Tech player used a racial slur during its 42-25 victory over Mississippi in the Texas Bowl. When asked to clarify his statement, Kiffin said: "I'm not going to because I did not hear it, (I'm not going to) say that that happened for sure that he gave a racial slur to our player."

Texas Tech denied the allegation. "We are disappointed an opposing head coach decided to insinuate serious allegations that are false and irresponsible," Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said.

Preach, Dabo

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to sound bites.

And he did not disappoint during a news conference leading up to the Orange Bowl when talking about Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) legislation.

“We built this program on NIL. We really did,” Swinney said about the Tigers. “It’s probably different from what you’re thinking, though. We built this program in God’s name, image and likeness.”

Apparently, Swinney's prayers were not answered the night of the Orange Bowl.

Pass the mayo

Mayonnaise. Cheez-Its. french fries. Frosted Flakes.

Whatever happened to the traditional Gatorade bath?

Coaches now are prepared to have all kinds of food, drinks or condiments dumped on their heads after winning a bowl game. Maryland coach Mike Locksley sat for his dousing of four gallons of mayonnaise after beating NC State in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Thankfully Ty-D-Bol hasn't gotten into the sponsorship game. I can hear the first winning coach of the Ty-D-Bol Bowl. "That didn't taste like blue Gatorade."
