A Georgia mother was arrested after police accused her of setting off bug bombs in her home and locking her child inside to inhale the toxic fumes.

The boy was found in a bedroom gasping for air when officers arrived on June 18 at the home in Toccoa, a northeastern Georgia city near the South Carolina border, Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize said in a media release shared with USA TODAY.

Officers were initially dispatched to the home after receiving a poisoning call, Mize said. Because the boy could be seen in visible distress, Mize said officers who arrived at the scene forced entry into the home to get him out and allow medics to begin treating him.

The boy was later taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The child's mother, identified by Mize as Susan White, was later arrested and charged with reckless conduct. White's son told investigators his mother locked him inside their home to suffocate on the noxious fumes from several bug bombs she'd set off.
