Geraldo tweets half-nude 'selfie'; Internet fails to unsee

Geraldo Rivera posted a half-nude selfie to Twitter in honor of his 70th birthday. (@GeraldoRivera/Twitter)

Geraldo Rivera turned 70 earlier this month, and the talk show host appears to have kept himself in good shape. In such good shape, in fact, that Rivera took to Twitter early Sunday to post a nearly nude photo he took of himself—wearing nothing but a towel, tinted glasses, and his signature mustache—to show the world his toned torso.

"70 is the new 50," Rivera wrote in a tweet published at 2:02 a.m ET. "Erica and family are going to be so pissed...but at my age..."

The Brooklyn-born, Edgewater, N.J., resident is referring to 38-year-old Erica Levy, his fifth wife, whom he married in 2003. The couple has a 7-year-old daughter, Solita, and Rivera has four other children from previous marriages. His birthday was July 4.

The gratuitous self-portrait—or "selfie" in Internet parlance—sparked the inevitable avalanche of comments, including some from his cable news colleagues.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Geraldo's towel," Fox News' Greg Gutfeld wrote on Twitter.

"Geraldo throws his hat into the New York mayoral race," celebrity chef and CNN host Anthony Bourdain tweeted.

By noon, Rivera's selfie had been retweeted more than 1,000 times.

"Wait, that Geraldo photo is still up?" Evan Ramirez, aka ‏@iverdawg, wrote. "It wasn't posted by accident?"

UPDATE: Rivera deleted the tweet late Sunday afternoon.

"Note to self," he wrote. "No tweeting after 1am."
