An official memorial will be held for former German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble in the Bundestag in Berlin in January 22, parliamentary officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Details of the service have not been disclosed.

Schäuble, who was the finance minister of Europe's biggest economy during the eurozone debt crisis, died on December 26 at the age of 81.

He is due to be buried in his home city of Offenburg in south-western Germany on Friday, where there is expected to be a publicly broadcast funeral service and a funeral procession.

Top German leaders and hundreds of German and foreign guests are expected in the Bundestag in Berlin on January 22.

Soon after the former finance minister's death, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier decided that Schäuble was to receive a state memorial.

A trained lawyer, Schäuble was first elected to the Bundestag - the lower house of the German parliament - in 1972. He was a member of parliament for over half a century until his death.
