German parliament to consider recognition of Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainians
“Famine and repressions affected the whole of Ukraine, not only its grain-producing regions,” says the draft of a joint document prepared by factions of both the ruling parties in Germany and the opposition conservative CDU/CSU bloc.

“Therefore, from today’s perspective, the historical and political designation of (those events) as genocide is suggested. The German Bundestag shares the opinion of such a classification.”
The initiators of the resolution are a group of German lawmakers led by Robin Wagener, an MP from The Greens party, who is the head of the German-Ukrainian parliamentary group. They called on the German government to take measures to spread more information about the Holodomor and called it “part of the common history of Europeans.”
Until now, the German government opposed such designation and explained that there is a difference between the political and international legal assessment of those events.

Historians consider the Holodomor to be one of the most tragic genocides, in terms of the number of victims. According to various sources, between seven and 10 million people died of hunger at the time.
On Nov. 24, the parliament of Romania and the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
The upper house of the parliament of Ireland and the parliament of Moldova adopted the same decision.
The Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament unanimously recognized the Holodomor as a genocide of Ukrainians in April 2022.
Previously, this crime was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people by 16 countries.

Every year, on the fourth Saturday of November in Ukraine, the memory of millions of Holodomor victims is commemorated.
