German police identifies teen murderer of Ukrainian basketball player

The German police has established that a 15-year-old student of German-Turkish descent from Gelsenkirchen is responsible for stabbing 17-year-old Ukrainian basketball player Volodymyr Yermakov to death in Dusseldorf, German newspaper Bild reported on Feb. 12.

According to the report, around 8:00 p.m. on Feb. 11, Yermakov was returning home with his 18-year-old teammate Artem Kozachenko. On the bus, they got into an argument with a group of teenagers. When the athletes got off the bus near the train station, the teenagers attacked them, armed with knives.

The assault was caught on CCTV. On Feb. 12, German police detained two suspects.

According to the journalists, the main suspect is a 15-year-old schoolboy of German-Turkish descent from Gelsenkirchen. He had previously committed several assaults and robberies.

The second is a 14-year-old schoolboy of German-Greek origin from Herne, who is also known to police. The first was arrested, the second was handed over to his parents.

Yermakov and Kozachenko played for the ART Giants Düsseldorf U19 basketball team.

Yermakov was a member of the Ukrainian U-16 national team and played at the 2022 European Championships in Bulgaria.
