Germany-bound flight diverted at Logan Airport after smoke reported in cockpit

A flight that was heading to Germany was diverted to Logan Airport Monday night after crews reported smoke in the cockpit.

The Lufthansa flight departed Newark International Airport and was headed to Frankfurt, Germany until the pilot reported an electrical malfunction and turned the plane around as a precautionary measure.

Officials determined the gas odor was from a coffee machine on board.

Massport said the plane landed safely at Logan late Monday night and taxied to the gate. All 303 passengers and 19 crew members were safely accounted for, police said.

The passengers were accommodated with overnight hotel stays and were rebooked on a flight to Germany for Tuesday.
