Germany extends protection to Ukrainian refugees through March 2025

Germany extended residence permits for refugees from Ukraine who fled the war and received protection status until March 4, 2025, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI) announced in a press release on Nov. 24.

The Federal Council (Bundesrat) approved the ordinance on the same day.

This means refugees do not need to apply for a renewal of their residence status or schedule appointments with immigration authorities.

The German government announced on Oct. 2 a decision to significantly reduce the funds allocated to the refugee reception and integration, compared to 2023.

A new program called Bürgergeld has been in effect in Germany since July 1, aimed at helping people who find it difficult to find their place in the labor market.
