Germany reports rising hostile intelligence attempts – DW

"Foreign secret services are employing every means at their disposal to obtain information, exercise influence and promote the interests of their country," the Director of the MAD, Martina Rosenberg, said.

According to her, the activities of foreign intelligence services were at "a high level" before Feb. 24, when the Russian invasion in Ukraine began. It changed the security situation in Europe, counterintelligence “especially matters.”

“The aim of our work is to identify any espionage activities, particularly by Russian and Chinese intelligence services, at an early stage and to fend them off effectively in cooperation with national and international partner authorities,” she said.

Rosenberg recalled numerous spying attempts were noticed in Germany last time. In particular, unrecognized drones were spotted near the military training area in Wildflecken, Bavaria, where Ukrainian troops underwent training. According to the Federal Ministry of Defense, drones had repeatedly flown over the area on the Bavarian-Hessian state border in the night from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1.

In the end of August, Russian secret services were spying Ukrainian soldiers training on usage of Western weapons. Back then, the MAD noticed suspicious vehicles in the vicinity of the military bases in Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, where service, sanitation and mobilization centers of the Bundeswehr are located. Ukrainian troops train there using a PzH 2000 howitzer. Also they were spotted near one more military base in Grafenwoehr in Bavaria.
