Getaway BMW in Brooklyn NYPD cop shooting found abandoned in Manhattan, officer still fighting for life

The BMW used by the gunman who shot and gravely wounded an off-duty NYP cop during a botched Facebook Marketplace robbery has been found abandoned in Manhattan, police sources said Monday.

The gunman is still being sought — and the wounded cop remains in grave condition at Brookdale University Hospital.

The cop, who joined the NYPD in July 17 and assigned to the 66th Precinct in Borough Park, went with a relative to East New York Saturday night carrying $20,000 in cash for a Honda Pilot he had arranged to buy.

But when they got to Ruby St. near Linden Blvd. the seller told them to come with him toward an alley, police sources said. The seller pulled a gun and when the officer went for his own weapon the crook fired six times, sources said.

The off-duty officer’s relative, a brother or brother-in-law, then grabbed the wounded cop’s weapon and returned fire five times — but apparently didn’t hit the crook, sources said.

One witness, who didn’t give his name, described the chaos. “They ran between the houses shooting,” he said. “I heard nine or 10 shots. They ran toward Dumont [Ave.} shooting at each other. It was a gunfight.”

The robber rode off north on Ruby St. in the BMW then turned right on S. Conduit Ave., sources said. It wasn’t clear if he was the driver.

The officer, shot in the head, was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital.

“We are lifting the family up in prayers,” Mayor Adams said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Monday morning. “Right now the family is deciding their decisions and is still in the care of the medical professionals.”
