How do I go about getting titles to cars registered in Connecticut? | Ask the RI DMV

Q: My father passed away in Connecticut. I am the executor of his estate and currently have both of his automobiles. I want to register them in Rhode Island. After going through all his paperwork, I cannot find the titles to either of the vehicles. One is a 2008 while the other is a 2014. How do I go about getting them registered if I don't have the titles?

A: You will need the titles in order to register these vehicles in Rhode Island. Go to the Connecticut's DMV’s website: portal.ct.gov/dmv and then find “Replace Titles.” Follow those instructions and you should be able to get the duplicate titles that you need.

Once you have the titles, go to our website (dmv.ri.gov). In the “Registration, Plates & Title” tab, go to the “Registration” tab and look for “Transfer at Death.” Based upon the information you provided, you will fit into the “Death with Appointment as Administrator or Executor” for vehicles 2001 and newer. Follow these instructions. You can print all the required RI DMV forms, too. Go to the “Forms” tab and then the “Registration Forms” and “Taxation Forms.”

These transactions can be done in person. Reservations are required to come to any of the RI DMV branches. Follow the instructions on our site for making a reservation: “Schedule Reservations and/or Road Tests,” “All Other Reservations,” and “Make a New Reservation.”

After you’ve made your reservation, you will receive a text or an email confirmation. Show this to the security at our branches and they will let you in. Go to the "Check-In Booth" and they will review your documents and give you any forms you may not have.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your reservation, follow the previous steps: “Schedule Reservations and/or Road Tests,” “All Other Reservations,” and go to “Modify or Cancel a Reservation.” It’s very important to cancel a reservation if you’re not able to keep it. This will open up that time slot for someone else to use.

Or, you can mail in all the paperwork and completed forms to our Cranston DMV, 600 New London Ave., Cranston, RI, 02920. Make sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope (FedEx, UPS, USPS) to expedite your paperwork’s return to you. We also have a Drop Box – available during business hours only – as another option for you to complete these transactions.
