The Gettysburg Tour Center has been demolished.

The center is located at 778 Baltimore St., and it has been the departure location for battlefield tours since the 1950s. It moved into the current building in the 1960s, and it has stood in this one location for more than 60 years.

The building was torn down Thursday to make room for a new tour center that will be built in its place. The architect for that new center is Buchart Horn Architects and the general contractor is eciConstruction, according to a press release shared on Gettysburg Battlefield Bus Tours' Facebook page.

“I feel the timing is right for reinvestment into the business and the town. The positive return of visitation after our worst year ever in 2020 has given me confidence that Gettysburg will remain a popular destination for travelers well into the future," Gettysburg Battlefield Bus Tours owner Max Felty said in the release.

The new building will have more square footage, energy efficiency and handicapped visitor accessibility. A previous upgrade to the location was planned in the early 2000’s, but with the construction of the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center in 2008, those plans were put on hold, according to the release.

The tentative start date for the construction is mid-February with an estimated completion date to coincide with the start of the 2024 tourist season, per the release.

The Gettysburg Tour Center will be operating out of a temporary space located across the street from the construction site, at 777 Baltimore St., Suite 100. Battlefield Bus Tours will continue throughout 2023 with tours departing from the temporary location as well as the parking lot across the street.

Construction progress will be shared on the Gettysburg Battlefield Bus Tours' Facebook page.
