Ghana Security Forces Fire Gunshots Near Rowdy Crowd Outside Election Office

Local news reported security forces fired “warning shots” near a restless crowd gathered outside an election commission building in Techiman, Ghana, on December 8, as they waited for presidential and parliamentary election results to be announced.

The Electoral Commision of Ghana announced on Tuesday that it would extend it’s timeline for declaring the election results, “to ensure the collation of results at the Constituency and Regional Collation Centres across the country is accurate.” News reports said both the NPP and NDC parties declared victory, but the final results had not yet been officially determined.

The first clip in footage filmed by local radio station Hitz 103.9 FM shows armed security forces attempting to keep members of the public away from election officials. Several people are seen shoving and attempting to grab a paper from the hands of an election official. In a second clip, a uniformed security official can be heard saying: “Everybody must leave the house.” A third clip shows armed security forces shooting rifles near a crowd of people outside the election commission building.
