New Ghostbusters reboot director Jason Reitman has clarified comments he made that some interpreted as a dig at the 2016 female-fronted remake.

The new sequel to the '80s originals was announced last month, and is not set to be connected to the 2016 movie, which starred Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. However, in a new interview this week, the director said his movie is "trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans", which many saw as a thinly-veiled criticism of the recent remake.

Reitman has now responded to the outrage, saying that the comments were misinterpreted and that he was a big fan of 2016's Ghostbusters.

"Wo, that came out wrong!" he tweeted. "I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie!"

He's also been supported by the 2016 reboot's director Paul Feig, who tweeted: "Jason was a supporter of mine at a time when I couldn’t get movies made.

"He has always been a true gentleman to me and a supporter of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. I can’t wait to see his take on the Ghostbusters universe. Big love and respect to you, Jason. Your fan, Paul".

In the original interview on Bill Burr's podcast, Reitman spoke about the visual and musical cues of the original 1984 movie, directed by his father Ivan, and how it has inspired his version.

"We went back to the work files for the sound of the proton pack," he said (via The Playlist). "And we went back to the stems of Elmer Berstein’s score. Just for where it says, in the teaser, 'Sumer 2020', we went back and found the original physical vinyl letters they used to create the Ghostbusters poster in 1984.

"Rescanned them and then our titles guys reprinted them. We filmed the titles. Not like in a computer. We shot physical titles with a light and smoke effect because that’s how they would have done it back in the day."

He then added: "We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans".

Ghostbusters 3 will be released on July 10, 2020.
