Moutin-led M.O.M. performs at Merrimans’ Playhouse in South Bend

SOUTH BEND — M.O.M. performs at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Merrimans’ Playhouse, 401 E. Colfax Ave., Suite 135.

Made up of bassist François Moutin, saxophonist and clarinetist Jowee Omicil, and drummer Louis Moutin, the trio started from an unplanned encounter between Omicil and Louis Moutin on the set of the Netflix show “The Eddy” in Paris.

Omicil had a main role as the sax player in the house band on “The Eddy,” a French-American series set at a Paris jazz club called The Eddy. Louis Moutin had a recurring role as a drummer at the club.

When Louis’ brother François joined them, these three “mômes” (French slang for “kids”) improvised with a completely frameless approach to make music that’s described as joyful, intense, deep and spontaneous.

For years, twin brothers François and Louis Moutin co-led the groups Moutin Factory Quintet and Moutin Reunion Quartet, as well as performing together as the rhythm section for Martial Solal, Jean Michel Pilc and Michel Portal. Moutin Reunion Quartet performed several times at the former Trio's Jazz Club in South Bend.

Of Haitian origins, born and grown in Montreal and now living in Paris, Omicil plays soprano, alto and tenor saxophone as well as clarinet.

Tickets are $20-$10.
