Giancarlo Stanton and the Injured List: A look back at the Yankee slugger’s history of injuries

Giancarlo Stanton is back where he’s spent a good chunk of his Yankee career: the injured list.

The 33-year-old was placed on the 10-day IL after pulling his hamstring jogging into second base in Saturday’s 6-1 win over the Twins. The expectation is that Stanton will be out at least four-to-six weeks.

The 2017 NL MVP has experienced a plethora of injuries, mainly to his lower body throughout his pinstripe tenure. The California native has spent nearly 40% of regular season games on the shelf. The good news for the Bombers is that they’ve been equally successful with their big bopper off the field as they have been with him on it.

Since being acquired by the Yanks in a trade with the Marlins prior to the start of the 2018 season, Aaron Boone’s club is 158-106 (.598) without Stanton and 279-182 (.605) with him.

Here’s a look at all of the injuries that have landed the slugger on the injured list as a Yankee:

APRIL 1, 2019: BICEP STRAIN

Stanton landed on the injured list for the first time during his second season with the Bombers. The righty took an awkward swing on March 31 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Stanton did not return until June 18 in a season that was filled with injuries for the YankeesAaron Judge also missed 60 games as the clubs’ motto was “Next man up” that season.

When he did return, it did not last very long.

JUNE 25, 2019: SPRAINED MCL

Shortly after returning from his April injury, Stanton began another long stint on the IL after he sprained his MCL sliding into third base against the Blue Jays.

Stanton did not return from the knee injury until Sept. 18.

In total, the slugger played just 18 regular season games in 2019 before missing four of six ALCS games in their loss to the Houston Astros.

AUG. 8, 2020: HAMSTRING

Stanton strained his left hamstring on Aug. 8 during the shortened 60-game COVID pandemic season against the eventual AL Champion Rays.

The right-handed slugger played in just 23 games during the regular season but was a full-go for the postseason where the Bombers lost to the Rays in the ALDS.

Stanton mashed six postseason homers in seven games against Cleveland and Tampa.

MAY 14, 2021: QUAD

Stanton experienced few injuries during the Yankees’ disappointing 2021 season — 92 wins and a wild card loss to the Red Sox.

He strained his left quad on May 14 forcing him out of the lineup for two weeks.

The big bopper managed to stay healthy the majority of the 2021 season playing 139 games and slashing .273/.354/.516 with 35 homers and 97 RBI.

MAY 24, 2022: CALF

Stanton left a game against the Orioles on May 24 after tweaking his calf. The Bombers placed him on the 10-day injured list. He would return on June 4.

The Yanks were in the midst of a historic first half of the regular season as they were 30-13 at the point of Stanton’s injury and finished the first half with a 66-31 record.

Just before Stanton’s second injury of the season ...

JULY 23, 2022: ACHILLES

On July 23, the Bombers placed him on the IL with an Achilles injury and he would not return until Aug. 25.

Overall he played 110 games during a season that ended with another loss to the Astros in the ALCS.

He slashed .211/.297/.462 with 31 homers and 78 RBI in arguably his least productive — while on the field — season in pinstripes as he seemed to never recover from the Achilles injury.
