Giant brown trout was just shy of Minnesota record

Apr. 30—Duluthian Eric Torvinen caught this giant brown trout in Lake Superior just off shore from downtown Duluth on April 18 while fishing with his dad and brother.

The big trout put up an epic battle and was "a conservative 34.5 inches," Torvinen said, and weighed 14.25 pounds on the home bathroom scale. Torvinen notes that the Minnesota state record brown trout, caught in 1989, was 31.5 inches and 16 pounds.

Torvinen kept and ate the fish. "I dabble in subsistence lifestyle and I love to eat things that I catch, kill, grow or find," he noted.
