Giant Eagle in Shadyside closes, re-development plan to begin in plaza

The Giant Eagle in Shadyside is officially closed so a re-development plan can begin in the plaza where it is located.

The grocery store was located in the Shady Hill Center Plaza at the intersection of Penn and Shady avenues. The entire strip mall is being redeveloped by Echo Realty.

A smaller Giant Eagle, an apartment complex and a parking garage are expected to be installed at the site. Construction for this project will begin in the fall.

Giant Eagle has created alternative ways for residents to shop for groceries during the closure. A mobile market and a community pickup point are part of the company’s solution.

The store could be closed for up to two years before the re-development is finished.
