Giant Prehistoric Shark Tooth Washes Up On U.S. Beach

A huge tooth belonging to a shark that was THREE TIMES bigger than any shark living today has just washed up on a North Carolina beach.

The six-inch long tooth is about as big as an adult hand and belonged to the Megalodon - a prehistoric shark that swam the waters 15 MILLION years ago.

Denny Bland, who found the tooth on a beach in North Top Sail, said it “felt like winning the lottery”.

Megalodons grew to around 60 feet long, and are considered one of the most ferocious sea predators to have ever lived.

Fortunately for us, they are now extinct but rain and high tides from the recent Hurricane Joaquin are thought to be responsible for this fossilised tooth washing up on shore.

And this isn’t the only one either - more Megalodon teeth have washed up in record amounts since the beginning of this month.

Cynthia Crane, director of the Aurora Fossil Museum, told WITN: “Megalodon was this large, humongous shark that roamed the ancient seaways during the Miocene-Pliocene time - mainly mid Miocene to Pliocene - which was about 15 million to 5 million years ago.

”It’s nice to see them. It’s nice to have people finding and discovering fossils because it helps with our past and our record of paleontology of North Carolina.”

Just be thankful it is the past and not the present or we would NEVER be going in the sea again…
