Giants’ Kadarius Toney, Cowboys’ Damontae Kazee both fined; Jayron Kearse walks

Kadarius Toney is fortunate he swung and missed with that punch last Sunday at Dallas.

Toney’s right hand is no worse for wear, and he escaped with a manageable $12,875 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct from the NFL, according to a source.

Cowboys safety Damontae Kazee, the player Toney swung at, also got a $6,264 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct for tossing and tackling Toney to the turf.

Dallas safety Jayron Kearse was not fined for his postgame punch of tight end Evan Engram after the Cowboys’ win, however. The NFL said it doesn’t have clear video of the incident.

So it appears the players will have to legislate that themselves when the Cowboys come to MetLife Stadium on Dec. 19.

Meantime, Toney may get benched by Joe Judge for the start of Sunday’s game against the Rams, as well. The Giants’ coach has done that to other players to send a message before.

Toney said a disciplinary benching won’t affect how he prepares to play the Rams when he does sub in. He knows he still has a lot to learn.

“I’m just playing my role,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m not this or that. I was able to go out there and showcase what I can do, but at the end of the day I’m still the rookie. There’s still a lot that I have to learn, a lot of stuff that I have to overcome.”

Once Toney takes the field, Rams corner Jalen Ramsey promises to trash talk him and try to get in his head. Toney said he won’t take the bait and he can’t control what an opponent says.

Asked if Ramsey can cover him, Toney said: “It’s football, everybody has their on-plays and off-plays. It’s equal when you step on the field.”

Still, has any corner really been able to lock Toney down since he switched to receiver at Florida?

“There’s always great competition out there, so I mean, there isn’t anybody that’s locked me up or anybody that I haven’t been able to get open on,” Toney said. “It’s always been 50-50, no matter who I played against. Everybody has their up-plays and their down-plays and stuff like that.”
