Giants' Marco Luciano calls Arizona Fall League 'huge' for development

Giants prospect Luciano eager for 'huge' development opportunity originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Marco Luciano has been the Giants' top prospect for quite a while now, as the 20-year-old's raw power and solid all-around fundamentals have scouts raving about his MLB future. After hitting .278 with 18 home runs over 70 games with Low-A San Jose, he was promoted to play with the Eugene Emeralds in High-A.

While he didn't see quite the level of success he imagined, Luciano was the youngest player in the league and was listed as MLB Pipeline's No. 5 overall prospect in the league near the end of the season. Despite all the praise that has come his way, Luciano remains committed to working harder and is thrilled about his opportunity to improve in the Arizona Fall League.

"It's going to be really huge for me to keep working because the season didn't finish the way I wanted," Luciano said through interpreter Ydwin Villegas (h/t MLB/Jim Callis). "I can come here and do my work and keep doing what I need to do to get better."

Luciano is hitting .250 through six AFL games with the Scottsdale Scorpions, including a pair of home runs. Luciano is emphasizing developing his ability to read offspeed pitches, as well as his fielding.

"It’s going to be productive if I’m able to make the adjustments," Luciano said. "I struck out a lot during the season, so I’m working on that and working on my defense as well. For me, a productive Fall League will be getting better and sticking with the plan."

Brandon Crawford showed he is far from the twilight of his MLB career in 2021, and received a two-year contract extension after putting together a campaign that will have him among the candidates for NL MVP.

Regardless, Luciano should have a chance to work his way up to the Giants' roster in the next two or three seasons, and if he continues to develop at the rate the organization hopes he will, Farhan Zaidi and Gabe Kapler will find a way for him to contribute.
