Giants’ Mike Glennon ‘ready to go’ if Daniel Jones can’t play vs. Rams

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones appears to be making progress and could even play in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Rams, but concussions are tricky. It may ultimately come down game-time decision.

Until then, veteran Mike Glennon is taking the primary reps in practice and feels confident in himself should his name be called on Sunday.

“I’ll continue to prepare to get ready to play. You know, that’s not up to me. All I can do is control what I can control, and that’s to get ready to play,” Glennon told reporters on Wednesday. “I’m extremely confident in myself, confident in the guys around me. We threw the ball around well when we got out there, so I feel ready to go.”

Glennon completed 16 of his 25 passes for 196 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions after taking over for the injured Jones last week. After he settled in, he looked a bit more comfortable despite the interceptions.

With a little extra practice time under his belt this week, Glennon feels he will perform better if needed.

“I feel good. I’ve been in so many systems that there’s so much overlap. Everyone runs different things and features different plays, but the systems are all relatively similar. Just getting to know the plays that [Jason Garrett] likes to feature, I feel very comfortable with,” Glennon said.

“I’m here to do the best in any role that I can. Whether that’s to support Daniel, go out and play, whatever it is I’m going to do to the best of my ability.”

Outside of their running ability, Glennon also believes he and Jones share a somewhat similar skill set which is a fit for Garrett’s offensive system. That’s part of the reason for his abundance of confidence.

“I think we do have similar skill sets, outside of him obviously being a better athlete than me. The system that we run here with JG fits who I am, fits who he is, so I feel more than comfortable with the concepts in the passing game that we run,” Glennon said.

As far as being able to lift the team to victory in a spot-start, Glennon referred back to last season’s game against the Seattle Seahawks when Colt McCoy stepped in and picked up the upset victory. He also pointed back to the Giants’ upset of the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.

“It’s the NFL. Any given Sunday – I mean, I don’t know what the spread was when we played the Saints, but I’m sure not many people were picking us to beat the Saints. This is the NFL, so either side you’re on, you’ve got to show up every week,” Glennon added.

Should Glennon be forced to start on Sunday, the Giants hope they’re able to mimic either of those outcomes.
