Gibson Southern running back Devan Roberts voted Courier & Press Player of the Week
EVANSVILLE — Devan Roberts is quietly having one of the top individual seasons in Southwest Indiana.
The Gibson Southern running back produced another quality effort in a 35-7 victory over Mount Vernon to keep the No. 2 Titans undefeated. For his effort, Roberts was voted the Courier & Press High School Football Player of the Week from Week 7. The senior received 15,404 votes in the online poll at courierpress.com.
There were 40,098 total votes this week with Jasper running back Jayce Perkins finishing as the runner-up at 9,702 votes.
Roberts has been one of the top players for one of the best teams in the state. The senior rushed for 121 yards on just 11 carries and found the end zone four times against Mount Vernon. His three first-half scores put the Titans up 20-0 by halftime. Roberts iced the game with a 54-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to start a running clock.
The running back has 796 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns through seven games while averaging 8.2 yards per carry. Roberts has broken the century mark and produced multiple scores five times this season.
Gibson Southern (7-0) remains atop the PAC Large School Division standings with two conference games remaining. The Titans host county rival Princeton Friday before traveling to Boonville next week for a potential conference championship.
The other Player of the Week finalists were North Posey quarterback Liam Stone, Harrison quarterback DeShawnDre Brown, North running back Angelo St. Louis and the Reitz defense.
