First-term Gibsonville Alderman Paul Thompson died unexpectedly Sunday night at Alamance Regional Medical Center, according to a town news release, he was 59.

Thompson was elected in November with 24% of the vote, just three votes ahead of the third-place finisher in a race for two open seats.

An Alamance County native, Thompson lived in Burlington and Graham before settling in Gibsonville close to 20 years ago, according to his campaign Facebook page. He was business manager for his family business Thompson Printing and at International Minute Press in Graham for a career of about 35 years. He also volunteered as an EMT and firefighter in Gibsonville, worked part-time at Alamance County 911 and Alamance County EMS and, early in his career, was a public safety officer at Elon College and an auxiliary officer with the Burlington Police Department.

Details about a memorial were not available Tuesday morning.
